Before crochet patterns were readily available in print form, ingenious family members would make do with small swatches of cotton fabric from a pillowcase, perhaps, and write the pattern with ballpoint pen for an edging which was attached to the same fabric. Hemstitch cloth in linen and cotton were also available to attach thread in the pre-punched holes. These examples were found in a box of crochet collectibles my mother gave me.The 10 X 14 inch shirt box with a department store label was full of crochet accouterments. All neatly placed in 4 smaller boxes, the contents told the story of one anonymous woman who derived much pleasure from many long, relaxing hours of crochet! I have kept the box intact since I received it in 1981; and will never part with it. She is an anonymous woman who nevertheless became familiar to me by the passionate connection to her crochet belongings!
