Description

A historic Wilcox and Gibbs sewing machine, produced sometime in the early-1900s. This machine was a one-thread “Chain-Stitch Machine”, a selling point for the Wilcox and Gibbs company. These machines were cheaper than their competitors like Singer, and were popular for making things like feed sacks, which would later be taken apart to be re-used. Wilcox and Gibbs produced both hand-crank and electrical sewing machines, this is an example of an electric model.

A Note from the Contributor

Maria C. Vallejo: Old School. This Wilcox and Gibbs beautiful sewing machine enjoyed the advent of electricity. How fun! How much faster and quickly the stitching and making of clothes had become. Every housewife would have wished to have one at home. The industrialized world was moving fast, and soon there would be many more to choose from.
